How to Uncurl a Spooled Fishing Line
- 1). One method for uncurling fishing line requires lots of open space. Remove all the tackle from the fishing rig. Prop the rig up or have someone hold it. Holding the tage end, or loose end, of the fishing line, walk the end out as far as it will go. Doubling back to the starting point is fine; do not cross the line though. Return to the rod, holding the line between the thumb and forefinger, and retrieve the line slowly. The curls and twists will be removed as you retrieve the line.
- 2). When curling and twisting on a fishing line is extreme, another technique is required. After removing the rig from the line, tie a high-quality ball swivel to the tag end. Attach the ball swivel to a tree branch, post or any other solid, stationary object. Holding the rig, walk away and let the line out until the end is reached. Keeping tension on the line, slowly retrieve it while walking back toward the object it is tied to. The barrel swivel will rotate, and the line will uncurl.
- 3). Uncurling a fishing line while you are in the field is uncomplicated if you are on a body of flowing water with no snags or obstructions downstream. Remove the tackle completely. Drop a few feet of line into the water, and as the current takes it, continue to spool off the line, stripping it out by hand if necessary. Allow the current to drag on the line for several minutes and then retrieve it slowly. Apply tension to the line as it is retrieved with the thumb and forefinger of your free hand.
- 4). When you are in a boat, uncurling a line becomes easier. After removing the tackle from the line, release the tag end into the boat's wake. With the vessel moving at idle speed allow the spool to unwind. Let the line drag behind for a few minutes and then retrieve it slowly, keeping some tension on the line with the thumb and forefinger of a free hand.
If you are in a boat, remove terminal tackle and let the line out behind the boat while moving at idle speed. After letting most of the line on your reel out behind the boat, drag it for a minute or so and then reel it in slowly. It will be straight with no twists when you reel it in. Make sure it is spooled tightly on your reel by keeping tension on the line as you reel in.
