How to Get Rid of Bugs in Whole Wheat
- 1). Remove everything from the pantry. Dump anything that was infested with bugs in the garbage. Wash those containers with water and dishwashing soap, using extremely hot water.
- 2). Place any grains that did not seem infested in the freezer for three to five days to kill any bugs that may exist.
- 3). Vacuum the inside of the pantry, removing all bugs, spilled grains and other debris. Sponge down the pantry shelves and pantry walls with a solution of hot water and dishwashing soap.
- 4). Spray the inside of the pantry with nontoxic, ecofriendly insect control spray. Coat all surfaces with a light mist. Allow the spray to dry then wipe down all surfaces with a sponge and fresh water.
- 5). Hang clusters of bay leaves around the pantry. Bay leaves are aromatics that naturally deter many insects.
- 6). Inspect grain containers for tightness. Fill them partly with water and put the lid on. Hold them upside down over the sink. If water seeps from under the lids, the lids are not tight enough. Replace those containers with airtight glass, plastic or metal containers.
- 7). Refill grain containers. Lay the matchbooks on top of the surfaces of grains in refilled containers. Many insects are repelled by the smell of sulfur that comes from matches.
- 8). Avoid buying grains in damaged packages and always inspect a product for bugs before purchasing. At home, immediately transfer all goods to airtight containers. Do not buy too much in bulk to keep grains revolving.
