There are a number of ways of inducing labor at home and some of them may surprise you.
However, before deciding to try to induce labor at home you should discuss this with your obstetrician if this is safe in your current stage of pregnancy.
Especially if your unborn child would be born premature, or if you have a serious medical condition such as diabetes, heart disease, or even cancer, then you should discuss with your obstetrician your plans.
If you do decide to try to induce labor at home, be sure that you have ready access to transportation to the hospital of your choice and that your obstetrician or a physician with whom you are comfortable is available to delivery your baby when the time comes.
Sex: Surprise, but sexual intercourse can induce labor through a variety of mechanism.
Oxytocin is a hormone that can cause powerful contractions of the uterus, and in fact, an analogue of this hormone called pitocin is used in the hospital under the guidance of an obstetrician to induce labor.
Sexual intercourse actually increases oxytocin levels in a woman's blood, thus increasing the likelihood that she will go into labor.
In addition, various biochemicals in sperm have been postulated to increase a woman's likelihood of going into labor.
Nipple Stimulation: This works by also increasing oxytocin levels in a woman's blood.
When a postpartum woman breast-feeds her child, the nipple stimulation leads to increase oxytocin levels in the blood.
During pregnancy, nipple stimulation also leads to increased oxytocin levels, which increases your chances of going into labor.
Exercise: While vigorous exercise is not recommended in the final stages of labor, modest exercise such as, walking is actually recommended for women in all stages of pregnancy if tolerated.
The movement of walking might increase pressure on the cervix and leads to a chain reaction of events that lead a pregnant woman to enter labor.
Acupressure: Acupressure is used to help balance the bodies energy flow.
By stimulating pressure points within your body, you can help induce labor.
Acupressure is also good to help manage the pain the can accompany delivery allowing you and your baby to have a safer delivery with fewer drugs and pain medications.
