Marketing your business in the financial industry is a constant process. It should never stop. Whether you are writing a presentation for a large business or making a simple phone call to a valued client, marketing should be on your mind daily. Here are just a few ideas to market yourself and your business in the financial industry. - Just for a moment, forget about mailers, emails and social networking and remind yourself how new clients were added or clients were served in the not-too-distant past. Pick up the phone and call them. Talk to current customers and ask if they need any additional financial services or have any questions about current services. This is a prime opportunity to upsell them on insurance and investments. Ask them if they have a friend or relative to which they can refer you. If so, call that person and set up a meeting to discuss their financial picture. If not, ask them to keep you in mind if they do encounter someone in need of financial services. After the phone call, take notes in your client's file and make sure you follow up if they stated they needed further service.
- Knowing your target audience, look into community events or conferences that may attract those to whom you would like to talk. Talk to organizers of the event and ask how you can help by providing goody bags, water bottles, pens and/or a booth displaying your services. Be sure to invite your current clients and encourage them to bring a friend to meet you. Set up your booth as a question-and-answer table so that potential clients can approach you to ask about investments, retirement savings options, educational savings accounts and other financial products. At your booth you will need brochures, bio sheet, business cards, newsletters and treats to hand out.
- Offer to speak at events that may include target customers. If you would like to reach working adults with a fabulous new IRA product, offer to speak at a parents' night in a school or a financial seminar at a church. Write articles for local newspapers or publications. Contact local radio stations to offer weekly financial shows to educate their listeners and answer listener questions. Any of these opportunities build your credibility and offer a chance for potential clients to get to know you.
- Know your territory and get to know the large-scale employers in your area. Employers of large numbers usually offer 401Ks and/or contribution/benefits plans. Talk to the employer, if possible, and set up appointments with employees nearing retirement. Referrals to co-workers will add up quickly, and the stream of potential customers will be ongoing.
