Ahmad Tall was an anti-colonial leader in what is now Mali. He fought against the Frecnh authorities in 1880s.

Date of birth: c.1833, Segou, on the Niger River, in the Toucouleur (aka Tukulor) Caliphate (now south-central Mali)
Date of death: 1898, Sokoto, Nigeria

Ahmad (aka Ahmadou) Tall was the son of a Toucouler chief, Oumar Tall, who became chief in turn on his father's death in 1864.

In 1879 he was detained by Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Simon Gallieni, French governor of upper Senegal and Soudan Français (French Sudan), who wanted a treaty recognizing a French protectorate over the region.

Ahmad Tall was released, and managed to keep the peace with the French authorities until 1887, when he began raiding around Segou. French troops, under the command of Lieutenant Archinard Louis, now Commandant-Superior of French Sudan, forced him from the area and he fled to Nigeria. He died in Sokoto, Nigeria, in 1898.
