Scholarships for Continuing College Students
- Junior level college students who are continuing their education to earn a graduate degree in a public service field are eligible to receive a Truman Scholarship. Amount of the scholarship is $30,000 as of 2011.
In addition to the scholarship, award recipients also receive career counseling, internship placement, assistance getting into graduate school and professional development. Applicants interview with members of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation before scholarships are finalized.
Applications are completed online; a policy proposal that presents ways to strengthen the United States government is required with each application. - Children of military personnel are eligible to receive money to pay for college through Scholarships for Military Children. They must be younger than 23 years of age and have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. Only children of active duty personnel are qualified to receive the scholarships.
Students are required to enroll in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting Systems (DEERS) database to apply for the scholarships that are available to students attending two- and four-year colleges. Applicants who are attending a two-year college when they receive the scholarships are required to go on to earn a four-year degree. Tuition, books, lab fees and other college-related expenses are covered with the scholarships. - College students who are United States citizens, currently enrolled at (or accepted into) a two- or four-year college or university and pursuing a degree in the health care field, e.g., dentist, physician's assistant, are eligible to receive a National Health Service Corps scholarship.
Upon graduation, scholarship recipients are required to work in the health care industry at least one year for each year they received the scholarship. For example, students who receive scholarship funds for three years must work for at least three years as a physician, nurse or medical assistant.
Typically the deadline to apply for a National Health Service Corps Scholarship is Sept. 30. The scholarship covers the costs of tuition and lab fees. Students also receive a taxable living stipend. The 2010-2011 living stipend equaled $1,289. - Music majors who attend the College of Notre Dame of Maryland are eligible to receive the Achievement Award. Amount of the scholarships ranges between $2,500 and $5,000 as of 2011. Good academic standing in high school or college, community service and involvement in band, art, creative writing music or theater help students to qualify for the scholarship. Students born outside Maryland are eligible to receive the scholarship.
Approximately 58 scholarships are awarded each year. Deadline to apply for the Achievement Award is typically the last day in December. - The American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education (AFPE) sponsors the AAPS/AFPE Gateway Scholarship. Amount of the scholarship is $5,000 as of 2011. Applicants must major in pharmacy at an accredited college of pharmacy or at another accredited institution that offers degrees in the pharmaceutical sciences. Approximately four AAPS/AFPE Gateway scholarships are awarded each year. Deadline to apply for the scholarship is generally the last week of January.
