United States Immigration Customs
- Most people associate ICE with its Detention and Removal department. That department is responsible for identifying, apprehending, and removing illegal immigrants, especially fugitives and criminals. If you are aware of any suspicious activity, contact ICE directly at 1-866-DHS-2ICE.
- The detention and removal department oversees many detention facilities, where illegal immigrants are placed as they wait for their trial or until they are removed from the country. ICE detention facilities are federally run and differ from local and state jails or prisons. Illegal immigrants have an opportunity to defend themselves in front of judges. If the judge decides that the immigrant must be removed, the detention and removal department will coordinate logistical and transportation issues. Sometimes, the department will escort immigrants to their foreign countries.
- ICE manages operations within the U.S. and abroad. For example, the Office of International Affairs works to prevent terrorism and crime by investigating international criminal organizations. To improve overseas intelligence, the international affairs office works with U.S. allies like Mexico, Canada and the United Kingdom.
- The Office of Intelligence manages different Field Intelligence Units throughout the U.S., which works with various sources, such as law enforcement agencies and the public. The Cyber Crimes Center searches for images of child abuse to locate major distributors and producers. It also investigates people who engage in sex with children, smuggling, violating intellectual property, and trafficking of drugs and illegal arms. For instance, the Cyber Crimes Center collects data using chat rooms, websites and newsgroups.
- ICE hires several contractors to fulfill various operational needs. For instance, contractors have worked as security guards, interpreters, and clerical support. Contractors and outside suppliers also provide products like guns, hand restraints, and handcuffs. Additional information about working with ICE can be found online at dhs.gov/openforbusiness.
