Spooling Line

• Fill the casting reel with line of an appropriate pound test. This will be determined by the type of fishing to be done. Feed the tag or loose end of the line through the line guide which should be attached to a small bar across the front of the spool. Wrap the line around the spool two times. Some reel may have a small anchor hole through which the line may be passed for anchoring. There should be about three to four inches of line left on the tag end. Use an arbor knot to attach the line to the spool. Tie an overhand knot with the tag end around the main line and another over hand knot using only the tag end. Moisten the knot and pull down tight. Trim the excess from the knot. With tension on the line, begin reeling until the spool is filled.
  
  

Casting with a Bait Casting Reel

• Cast with the reel by releasing or depressing the large spool release button located at the top rear of the spool. By depressing the button the spools winding mechanism is released allowing the spool to move freely. Make sure the thumb is on the spool to prevent the line from freely unspooling. Bring the rod back the side and then rapidly forward. As the rod comes forward, slightly release the line allowing it to unspool from the reel and move toward the target. Maintain some pressure as the line will tend to over run when the lure hits the water.
  
  

Retrieving the Lure

• With the thumb still on the spool, turn the handle of the reel forward. Initially, there will be a slight resistance as this will be the spooling mechanism reengaging. Continue to turn the handle of the reel to retrieve the lure. The line guide, due to gearing in the reel, will move side to side across the face of the spool to evenly wind the line onto the reel.
