How to Find a Person Buried in a New York Cemetery
- 1). Gather information related to the deceased individual. If you don't have the information readily available, ask family members or close friends of the deceased. Obtain the person's full name and the date and place of the burial. Sometimes family members or friends may even be able to give you specific directions to the burial plot using cemetery landmarks. For example, a family member might tell you to look for an angel underneath a tree that is close to the grave site.
- 2). Contact or visit the cemetery. The New York State Division of Cemeteries maintains a partial listing of nonprofit cemeteries, including contact information. If you think the person might be buried at one of these locations, contact the agency and request a burial-record check. You might have to provide the person's full name and date of death to obtain more information.
- 3). Access Find A Grave's official website. This database contains national and international grave listings for your perusal. Enter the person's name into the search field and select "The United States" using the drop-down menu feature. Choose "New York" as the designated state. You can also select the county from the list when applicable. Click "Search" to view records.
- 4). Visit the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs' website if you're searching for a veteran of the armed forces. This website allows users to search grave sites nationwide, in a variety of locations including state veteran cemeteries, VA national cemeteries and other designated locations. When using this site, you must enter the deceased individual's last name. Enter other identifying information, such as the soldier's date of birth and death to search all records. Select "New York cemeteries" to view records for soldiers buried in those locations.
