Just Getting By

I went to the local grocery store today, I had a short list, so I thought, I wouldn't have too much to pay.
I stood there at the checkout counter as I watched the total go up.
Fifty one dollars and 62 cents, how could 3 little bags cost so much?! I must've looked funny with my jaw on the floor.
I said a few words under my breath, as I headed out the door.
Then I had to stop, and put some gas in the car.
%*!#%*!! I'd walk to work, if it wasn't so far!! I need to find me, another line of work.
Perhaps in the oil business, I could make some money for sure! One hundred dollars for three little bags, and not even a full tank of gas.
How can I stretch these out, how long can I make them last? I got home, sat down, and balanced my checkbook out.
I watched as the numbers dwindled, and shook my head as words fell from my mouth.
I'm trying to pay, on hospital bills and more.
That twenty percent has left me, shopping for clothes from the second hand store.
My credit card, along with interest, is still through the roof.
Though I pay and pay, it's still high, and Chapter 13, I can't do.
My 401K has vanished, in nearly the blink of an eye.
If I'd kept the money, my loan would be paid off, the bank would be happy, and so would I.
They tell me I make too much money, but how can this be? I don't know where they get their figures from, cause it sure don't match with my reality.
But in spite of it all, and just getting by day to day.
I thank god for my family, for togetherness, and giving us another day.
