Trent Willmon Concert Review

Having never been to the Dusty Armadillo, I had no idea what to expect. Right smack-dab in the middle of nowhere, I had been hearing about it for years on my favorite radio station, K-105. When I heard Trent was going to be there for a show I finally decided to pay a visit to the place and see what all the hoopla was about. I also had never seen Trent's show so I was gonna be killing two birds with one stone if you will.

Looking at it from the outside, you'd never believe the place contained such an incredibly large dance floor surrounded by so many tables and chairs. Most dance clubs have one or other. Lot's of seating and a little dance floor or just the opposite. The Dusty has both. The Dusty also had plenty of friendly staff making sure everyone had a great time. This place is definitely one I'd recommend to anyone looking for a fun night out. It's warm, friendly and very convienent to find, just three miles off Interstate 76.

Already being pleasantly surprised the night was about to get even a whole lot better. Having the great pleasure of interviewing Trent before the show, Mark Wier, Trent's tour manager escorted me to the bus where I got to sit down and chat with Trent for twenty minutes or so. After a local band played a brief set it was time for Trent to take the stage. There to introduce him was none other than K-105's own - Dave Steele.

Dave is about one of the most enthusiastic DJ's I've ever heard. He loves country music and if you ever get a chance to listen in at his time slot on K-105, you'll see what I mean. Dave introduced Trent to a very welcoming crowd of honky-tonkers. Opening his set with a song off his current album, A Little More Livin',"Good One Comin' On," was the perfectly titled song of how the night was gonna be. There was no rushing to the stage to get a close spot up front 'cause fans had been securing those for over an hour already. The rest of the crowd filled in behind those lucky ones up close, and everyone erupted into applause when Trent started on his set.

Trent had shared with me earlier in the night about how great his band is and that's something you can totally believe. Including Trent on guitar, the six piece band blasted their way through almost all of the songs on the current album. "Sometimes I Miss Ya," "The Ropin' Pen," and two of my favorites, "Surprise," a true life happening of Trent's fiddle player, and "Louisiana Rain." The latter being one of the best bluesy songs I've heard in quite a while. Trent's beautiful, smooth flowing, heartfelt voice combined with some soul stirring guitar licks echoing around the building, made me feel like I was somewhere in Memphis at a geniune blues club. The crowd was lovin' it and Trent was lovin' them saying this show was one of the best he's ever had. He also performed his single, "On Again Tonight," and "Good Horses To Ride." This song is a slow, waltzy track that'll whisk you away to a real desert sleeping cowboys life. If you love the sound of a slow, sad and lonely fiddle, you'll love this song live.
