  Residents of and visitors to Southeast Michigan may not associate the upscale Detroit suburb of Birmingham with great barbecue restaurants, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. While there is only one true barbecue restaurant within the Birmingham city limits, there are two more very good ones in the nearby communities of Southfield and Farmington Hills.
  
  

Kirk's Bar-B-Que

  Kirk's Bar-B-Que is the only barbecue restaurant in Birmingham proper. It is a family business that dates back to 1962, when it was known as Kirk's Open Pit Bar-B-Que, with locations in Detroit and Inkster. In July 2008, two daughters and a son-in-law of the original owner, Kerfoot "Kirk" D. Lewis, Sr., re-opened the restaurant as Kirk's Bar-B-Que, on Woodward Avenue in Birmingham.
  
  Kirk's Bar-B-Que serves ribs, pulled pork, barbecue and broasted chicken, shrimp and catfish. Side dishes include French fries, broasted potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, and macaroni and cheese. Kirk's legendary ribs were voted best entrée at the 2009 Arts, Beats & Eats Festival in Pontiac, Michigan. Kirk's was also nominated for the 2009 "4 The Best" Best Barbecue Award, sponsored by WDIV Local 4.

  Nikola's BBQ is on Telegraph Road at 10 Mile Road in Southfield. Nikola's took third place in the 2009 "4 The Best" Best Barbecue Award, sponsored by WDIV Local 4. Comments on the WDIV website praise the generous portions, great food, reasonable prices and customer service.
  
  The Nikola's menu includes barbecue ribs and chicken, broasted chicken, seafood, sandwiches, burgers, salads and desserts.
