It is so thrilling to purchase your very first electric guitar especially when it is in the color you like and of your favorite brand. But the thing is, most new buyers get a little too over excited and end up buying the wrong one.

Here are some tips for enthusiastic buyers so they'd avoid mistakes while shopping for a guitar.

It is not advisable to purchase the same guitars that are being used by celebrity rockers. For starters, most of the instruments they use are custom built and very expensive; and besides, people have different playing styles and preferences and you might not have the same ones as your idol. What's best is to get an electric or acoustic guitars that you are most comfortable and suited with and once you've gotten the hang of playing it, then you can be almost certain to play confidently with all other guitars as well. As what musicians say, playing the guitar isn't about the type that you own but in the skills that you possess.

Always keep in mind that the most expensive display in the guitar shop doesn't have to be the best one for you. An honest and reliable salesperson wouldn't sell something difficult to handle to a novice player, unless he's just after getting a commission. Be smart and research for prices and don't jump into purchasing the first guitar that you see.

Usually, people who've never had a guitar before are told to buy an acoustic type first so they don't have to spend extra on electric guitar amps and guitar effects, but if you're still going to pursue rock music in the long run, then just purchase an electric guitar directly. You can just unplug it from its amplifier and use it in acoustic mode so you can practice without straining your fingers, and once you've already familiarized yourself with the basics, you can now connect it to all your effect boxes. One thing to look out for is the strings you'd install. Choose one that is comfortable for your preference and not the wrong size. Nylon with a size of 1/2 or 3/4 is ideal.

And lastly, if you have saved up some money, never buy the cheapest guitar in the store to have extra change for effect boxes or an amplifier. There are many regular priced guitars that produce a quality sound. Never settle for anything less as it will affect your playing as it will never sound good. These are only a few tips to help you get started with your guitar shopping. Good luck!
