California Trailer Standards
- California has standard regulations for all types of trailers, including conventional, fifth wheel, tent and motorcycle trailers. Hitch standards are strongest for the conventional forms, especially heavy models used for boats and other vehicles. For all designs, proper load distribution should be affected, as well as required methods for balance and sway-control; backing up and hitch use.
- California does not allow passengers in a trailer coach when you are in the process of towing it. You can have them in a fifth-wheel design as long as all other safety protocols are in use. If you do have passengers in a camper, you must ensure there is an active door that can accessed from the "inside and outside" of that camper.
- If you have a trailer or camper that is greater than 1,500 lbs., it must be equipped with brakes. The state approves of electric brakes that provide a controller the operator can activate in the towing vehicle which allows not only stoppage, but increased handling control. California also endorses those smaller trailers fitted with surge brakes such as folding trailers.
