    • Ford's Dearborn, Michigan, plant pared down production of the Mustang in 1987, when it eliminated the SVO (Special Vehicles Options), the high-tech, high-price version designed for high-speed driving on winding roads. The number of available option packages, or trim levels, was reduced, and the V6 engine was no longer an option. All models had fuel injectors, and the revised 5.0-liter HO engine had a power boost to 225 horsepower. Sales of all versions of the 1987 Ford Mustang were 159,145.

    Available Styles

    • The 1987 Mustang continued to be built on a Fox body and was available as a two- or three-door hatchback LX, a two-door LX convertible, a three-door hatchback GT and a two-door GT convertible. In 1987, base prices ranged from $8,043 for an LX coupe to $15,724 for a convertible GT.

    Facelifts

    • The exterior makeover of the GT included a grille-less front end with flush, single-unit halogen headlamps; redesigned taillights; rear spoiler; urethane side skirts; and turbine wheels. The LX grille had a slot with the Ford logo mounted on a center bar. The bumpers matched the body color. The front bumper had a spoiler. The GT and LX had redesigned steering wheels, arm rests, door panels, seat adjusters and dashboard instrumentation grouped in front of the driver.

    Performance

    • Ford boasted that the Mustang GT went from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds thanks to the 5.0-liter engine, improved low-end torque due to new cylinder heads and a change in the exhaust and computerized controls for fuel injection. This "pony" car was clocked at a 15.3-second quarter mile.

    Size and Weight

    • The curb weight of the 1987 Mustang ranged from 2,754 to 3,350 lb. The car was 179.6 inches long, 68.3 inches wide and 52 inches tall, with a wheelbase of 100.5 inches.

    Colors

    • Exterior colors available for the 1987 Mustang included Black, Dark Metallic Gray, Light Gray, Scarlet Red, Medium Cabernet, Dark Shadow Metallic Blue, Medium Shadow Blue Metallic, Medium Yellow, Bright Regatta Blue Metallic, Sand Beige, Dark Clove Metallic and Oxford White.
