Removing the Alternator

• 1). Ensure the car is parked on a flat and level surface so the vehicle can be raised. Open the hood and prop it up with the prop rod.
  
  
• 2). Disconnect the battery by unbolting the black cable. This will isolate the electricity.
  
  
• 3). Place a jack under the front crossmember. Raise the car up to slide jack stands under the driver and front passenger doors. There are pinch points located under the doors that are reinforced for jack stands. Lower the car onto the jack stands.
  
  
• 4). Locate the splash guard under the passenger side of the car next to the wheel. Unbolt it with a socket wrench and pull it away from the vehicle.
  
  
• 5). Unbolt the tensioner bolt by the air conditioner unit with socket wrench. This will loosen the belt on the air conditioner pulley. Pull the air conditioner belt off the pulley.
  
  
• 6). Unbolt the tensioner bolt by the alternator pulley with a socket wrench. Pull the belt off the pulley.
  
  
• 7). Unbolt the two bolts holding the alternator in place. There will be a bolt on the top and the bottom.
  
  
• 8). Pull the alternator away from the mounting bracket. Pull the wiring harness out of the back of the alternator by hand. Unbolt the nut off the stud holding the remaining wire. Pull the wire off the stud.
  
  

Installing the Alternator

• 1). Position the new alternator to the mounting bracket. Push in the wiring harness to the back of the alternator. It will lock in place once it has been pushed down far enough. Unbolt the nut and place the remaining wire onto the stud. Tighten the nut onto the stud to secure the wire.
  
  
• 2). Bolt the alternator to the mounting bracket with a socket wrench. Start threading both bolts by hand before tightening with a socket wrench.
  
  
• 3). Slide the belt over the alternator pulley. Tighten the tensioner pulley with the socket wrench. Ensure the belt has tension before installing the air conditioning belt. Repeat to install the air conditioning belt.
  
  
• 4). Bolt the splash guard to the bottom of the car with the socket wrench. The car is ready to be lowered to the ground.
  
  
• 5). Raise the car up to remove the jack stands. Pull the jack stands out from underneath the doors. Lower the car to the ground.
  
  
• 6). Connect the battery by tightening the negative cable to the terminal. Ensure the positive cable is secured on the positive terminal.
  
  
• 7). Start the car and allow it to idle to recharge the battery. Turn the car off and let it sit for an hour. Start the car to ensure the battery is holding a proper charge.
