How to Fold and Hand Over the U.S. Flag
- 1). Hold the flag at waist height with one person at each end. Each person should have one corner of the flag in each hand.
- 2). Fold the flag in half by bringing your hands together and holding both corners in one hand. Grasp the bottom of the fold with your other hand and hold the flag flat with the stars on the bottom side.
- 3). Fold the flag again in the same way keeping the stars on the outside. The person on the striped end of the flag should bring the corner on the folded edge up to the opposite, open edge forming a triangle. They should then fold the opposite corner up toward the person on the other end forming another triangle.
- 4). Continue folding in this way until the entire flag is folded. Tuck the last triangle of fabric into the pocket formed by the previous folds.
- 5). Hand the flag to the next of kin "on behalf of a grateful nation." The flat side of the triangle should be toward the recipient.
