Some Tips To Get Relief From Sciatic Nerve Pain

We often refer Sciatic nerve pain to Sciatica. Sciatic nerve is the largest nerve of the body. In the spinal cord it starts from lumbar vertebrae and ends at lower limb. The lower extremities of the patient faces pain and is known as sciatica. The pain starts from the lower back i.e. the lumbar region, which radiates behind the thighs upto the back of knees.

Sciatica is often caused when the sciatic nerve is pressed which results in inflammation and irritation of the nerve. The nerve can get the pressure due to lumbar disc herniation or radiculopathy. The sciatic nerve can be irritated due to other causes. Irritation from the adjacent bone, muscle, tumors etc. may be reason. Pain in the nerve can be caused due to internal bleeding, infections, injury, pregnancy etc.

Pain in peculiar type is Sciatica. This is described as burning or tingling pain which radiates from the lower back and upper part of buttock to the back of thigh and back of leg. Leg pain is what it is termed as. Pain remains upto hip or buttock sometimes, which is referred to as hip pain. Patient is not able to walk properly as a result of this. Enhancement of the pain is due to walking, stooping forward or bending the waist. By lying down on back this may be ameliorated. There may be burning sensation and numbness in the lumbar region and buttock, along with the pain.

The diagnosis of sciatica is done through Straight Leg Raising SLR test. In performing this patient is made to lying on his back. Raise one leg without support is what he is asked to do. Raising the leg above 30 degrees without any pain then the patient is not having sciatica. If he is not able to raise the leg and there is pain if the leg is raised with the help of hand, it means the patient has sciatic nerve pain. Some other tests to diagnose this are MRI, CT Scan and Electromyography.

While you are suffering from Sciatic nerve pain, below are the tips, which may help you. Heat and ice pack is applied on the back at first in an alternate manner. Heat helps to increase the blood flow and ice helps to overcome the inflammation to the affected area. To reduce pain this will help. When the pain becomes intolerable, you should take some kind of painkillers like aspirin or ibuprofen. Here are some, which can be helpful, massage, electrotherapy and exercises. In the back it helps in circulation and relaxes the muscles. Help sometimes are got through topical analgesic. By blocking the pain receptors these analgesics have the capacity to relax the tissues and muscles. Hydrotherapy is another tip to get relieved from sciatica. The muscle tissue is relaxed and reduces inflammation when the patient is advised to sit in the jacuzzi. If the patient wants to sit he is advised not to sit on hard or uneven surface. This may worsen the pain. so always sit on the place which has cushion mattress and proper support. Bad posture can also worsen the pain.
