Mobility scooter riders face potential road dangers each and every day.
Just ask hospital accident and emergency departments, occupational therapists, mobility experts - and scooter riders themselves! Navigating pedestrian-hostile streets is tricky enough for those on two legs; it can be downright dangerous for people who get around by electric scooter or motorized wheelchair.
Some of these dangers are obvious, others not so.
And some -now being termed "Mobility Scooter Danger Zones" - flag up those where there is a very real possibility of serious injury, or even death.
And parallel with this, rising public concern and anger over mobility scooter accidents to pedestrians - some fatal.
In Britain a committee of MPs has begun an inquiry looking at safety implications.
A spotlight that will not go away.
One of the issues they are examining is whether scooter drivers should get some kind of formal training before going out on to the streets.
So the spotlight is very much on mobility scooter safety issues.
And this focus and concern is not going to go away.
And for the riders, having an awareness of these areas is essential both to public safety and understanding - and to maintaining a life from injury a life that is truly independent.

• Consider buying from a range of safety accessories.
  These include lights, directional signals, reversing bleepers, horns, and rear view mirrors.
  
• And the best time to buy is before you purchase mobility scooters.
  This will help you to be safer from Day One, and give you that all important self-confidence.
  
• And before you reach even this stage, make sure you are fit and able to drive a mobility scooter.
  Then familarise yourself with how it operates.
  And without going far from your front door, take some practice runs.
  
• And remember the obvious: driving carefully, with consideration, alert at all times, and at low speeds, you are far less likely to have an accident.
