Insurance benefits for teachers provide key coverage for the professionals who are working to mold the minds of future leaders. These benefits extend through the teacher's career and into retirement, allowing for educators to maintain a high quality of life well past the long days of classroom activity and late nights spent grading papers and planning assignments. Overall benefits packages vary by school district, however. - Full-time educators are eligible for health care coverage. According to the website for the Baltimore City Public Schools, teachers are offered a choice of several health care providers with 100 percent of the premium paid by the school district and the board of education. Benefits include prescription drug coverage, basic dental plans and vision care. These benefits are never subject to pre-approval, meaning every full-time educator has access to these benefits at no cost. Part-time teachers are eligible to buy into these plans at a discounted rate.
- The basic premiums for life insurance is paid by the board of education on behalf of teachers. This frees up portions of a teacher's salary should he choose to contribute more than the 5 percent which is contributed from his salary to his basic pension plan, or to add more into his life insurance policy. While he may not directly benefit from his life insurance, a large policy will ensure there's enough money available for funeral expenses and to pay any outstanding debts at the time of death.
- According to the website for the Oklahoma Teacher's Retirement System, retired educators are eligible to choose to continue health insurance benefits that were extended to them while employed. The Department of Education will pay the first $100 to $105 of premiums on any plan selected by the retired teacher and will deduct any difference left over from the teacher's retirement payments from pension or annuity. Benefits depend on the plan chosen but can include emergency care, prescription drug coverage, basic dental plans and vision care.
