2 yesterday.
The OS now 7th upgrade since it launched in September 2008 and will finally bring Adobe Flash to smartphone browsing.
Resource heavy Flash has been questioned by smartphone manufacturers particularly Apple for a while now, but Google claims to have mastered processor speed, battery life & browsing experience.
Processor speed on the new OS is supposed to be up to 5x of Android 2.
1 and lets be fair that was a big step up already.
The 2.
2 upgrade should be available for on most of the latest Android smartphones, such as Nexus One, Milestone/Droid, HTC Desire, Legend and some of the newer HTC Heroes.
With now over 50,000 apps on Android Marketplace (12,000 alone last month) Google is still off Apples Apps Store, but expanding at a staggering pace.
The new Android OS also features more flexibility that allows app developers to decide where their apps can be stored, phone or the SD card.
A vision Apple should have a look at as it might crush its restrictive handsets.
Including all the latest Android technology, such as Google Goggles and the recently released Google Maps Navigation phones powered by the operating system are now challenging most of the handheld electronics market.
Recent advertising ratings have claimed that Androids phones market-share have surpassed those of Apple's iPhone and are now only second to BlackBerry in the smartphone market.
Apple did however release a statement that challenge the measurement implemented for this statement and said it was only behind Research In Motion's BlackBerry phones.
Froyo, the nicknamed Android 2.
2, will further tab into the corporate market by offering exchange compatibility, syncing calendars and various security features.
A smart move from Google as Enterprises are getter round to the idea of switching from the current BlackBerry preference.
The enterprise sector is where Research In Motion (RIM) saw there largest successes.
Google however has till date struggled to get acceptance from the large corporates, partly due to privacy and data concerns.
A mobile operating system would however be a route in.
So time to start getting excited about the new OS and rise of the smartphone wave.
Get ready, soon you won't need a desktop PC any more.
