How to Convert a Metric Odometer
- 1). Divide the odometer reading by1.609 to convert kilometers to statute miles. For example, 240.0 km / 1.609 = 149.161 miles.
- 2). Correct the accuracy of the answer by rounding the result to one decimal place. The answer cannot be more precise than the precision of the measurements used. Odometers measure to one decimal place so an answer using more than one decimal place gives a false sense of precision. For example, correcting 149.161 miles to one decimal place gives a distance of 149.2 miles.
- 3). Check for errors by multiplying the mile value by 1.609. If the answer is not the odometer value in kilometers, or very close to it, there was an error in the calculations.
