    • 1). Earn the required education. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, most employers prefer to hire medical technicians who have earned an associate's degree in medical technology. These programs are available at community colleges and vocational schools and take two years of full-time study to complete. Find programs in your area by contacting the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

    • 2). Apply for licensure with your state. The requirements for medical technicians vary by state; however, most require these professionals to pass a state examination. In addition, ask about bachelor's degree requirements. Some states require at least a bachelor's degree for licensure. Contact your state department of health to learn about local requirements.

    • 3). Seek professional certification. Employers prefer to hire medical technicians who have achieved professional certification. The American Medical Technologists (AMT) offers certification opportunities. Visit their website to download an application (see Resources). Once your application is approved, the AMT will contact you to set up a testing date.

    • 4). Request study guides from AMT. They offer a variety of preparatory information such as exam content outlines and practice exams. This will help you focus your study efforts to successfully pass the exam.
