History
The 180,000 sq foot Mohegan Sun casino opened in 1996 with 204 table games and 3,700 slot machines.

It was called the Casino of the Earth and was richly adorned with symbols and design elements in tribute to the proud heritage of the Mohegan Tribe. The casino was circular with four entrances representing the four seasons of the year: Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

In May of 2001 the Mohegan Sun converted their bingo hall into the first smoke free casino. It was called The Hall of the Lost Tribes and added 600 slot machines and 12 table games to accommodate the non-smokers.

The first major expansion to Mohegan Sun was called Project Sunburst and with it came the Casino of the Sky which opened in September 2001 and added 119,000 sq ft of gaming space with 2,400 new slot machines and 118 table games. The Casino of the Sky was also circular with four quadrants representing the natural elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Wind. The expansion also brought retail on two floors for more than 50 stores and restaurants along with new entertainment venues.

In April of 2002 Project Sunburst was completed with the opening of the 1,200 room hotel tower with luxury rooms, a spa and convention center.

In October of 2008 the ribbon was cut opening the Casino of the Wind which added 45,000 sq ft of gaming space along with 680 new slot machines, 28 table games and a new state of the art poker room with more than 40 tables. The Casino of the Wind expands on the natural theme of the casino incorporating the natural design elements that symbolizes the tribes history making a seamless transition as you enter from the Casino of the Sky. In the rear of the Casino of the Wind is a 35 foot tall 50 foot wide water wall that acts as a large projection screen making it quite a sight as you enter the poker room. The Casino of the Wind is the first phase of Project Horizon which will eventually include a brand new hotel tower.

More Than a Theme
The Mohegan Sun casino was designed by the Rockwell Group who incorporated a lot of wood and natural materials to keep with the feel of the natural beauty of the Earth and to tell the story of the creation of the world based on the Mohegan’s culture and traditions.
