Leadership Programs for Kids

Leadership is an ability that children acquire gradually through group experiences in which they practice communication, cooperation, problem solving, time management, self-reliance and teamwork. In addition to building these skills at school and during extracurricular sports, they may gain a can-do confidence by participating in after-school clubs and programs aimed at developing young leaders. - Although they are separate organizations, Boy Scouts of America and Girl Scouts have similar aims. They encourage children to grow in a variety of settings ranging from home communities where they participate in service projects to campgrounds where they hone skills including outdoor safety. These opportunities begin in the primary grades through through Tiger Cub Scouts for boys and Daisy Scouts for girls.
Both Scout organizations gradually expand children's abilities by encouraging them to complete skill-related projects to earn badges. In high school, boys who aspire to the rank of Eagle Scout must plan, develop and lead service projects. Similarly, high school girls work toward becoming an Ambassador Scout who participates in a "journey" project aimed at exploring and seeking solutions to an issue that deeply concerns them.
