Guitar For Kids -- The Gm, F#m, And G#m Chords
Greetings Humans!
We are going to start off by learning the Gm chord. From there, we will learn the F#m, and then the G#m chords. These last 2 will be a snap once the Gm chord is learned.
Trussssssst me...
Okay, so the Gm chord which of course, is a minor chord...
The notes in the Gm chord are G Bb D. No other notes are allowed.
Let's take a look at the chord fingering.
[ X X 5 3 3 3 ]
It's the 3rd fret that's the problem here. What you're gonna need to do is take your 1st finger and bar (or barre) the 1st 3 strings. Then you're gonna have to stretch your 3rd finger to place on the the 5th fret of the 4th string. The last 2 strings are not played.
The notes for the Gm chord are G Bb D. This is the definition of the Gm chord, so no other notes are allowed.
The notes from high to low are:
G D Bb G X X
Now remember... You need to make sure that all of the notes are clear. Your first finger will not be happy with you for making it bar 3 strings, but you gotta teach it who's boss.
Okay. So that's the Gm chord. Now we're gonna learn the F#m chord.
We're gonna do this by treating that Gm chord that we just learned as a chord "form" instead of merely a chord. To get to the F#m chord, we will move the Gm chord as a form down the neck 1 fret. The 1st finger will now be barring the 2nd fret, with the 3rd finger on the 4th fret of the 4th string.
The notes for the F#m chord are:
F# A C# -- Which of course are the only notes allowed.
[ X X 4 2 2 2 ]
On this chord, the notes from high to low are:
F# C# A F# X X
Now let us return to the wonderful Gm chord by moving that whole form contraption thingy back to where it was when you were barring the 3rd fret.
But don't get comfortable. We're gonna move it again, but this time UP 1 fret to where the 1st finger is barring the 4th fret and the 3rd finger is sitting on the 6th fret.
[ X X 6 4 4 4 ]
This is the G#m chord.
The notes from high to low are:
G# D# B G# X X
Make sure that you don't play the last 2 strings.
The definition of this chord is G# B D# -- the only notes allowed in the chord.
Alright! So that's 3 more tasty new chords for you to know and love. Keep practicing.
