How to Treat Prairies with Herbicides
- 1). Plant a crop of soybeans on the prairie the year before sowing. By doing so, you not only contribute nutrients to the soil, but this crop competes with the weeds and prevents new weeds from germinating.
- 2). Water your prairie property for two weeks before herbicide application to encourage weed growth. Weeds are easier to kill when they are vigorously growing and have more foliage surface area.
- 3). Apply 2 quarts, per acre, of non-selective herbicide that contains glyphosate. Walk back and forth on the prairie, hand-applying the herbicide, on a dry, wind-free day.
- 4). Reapply the herbicide in 10 days. Till the top 6 inches of top soil on the prairie and broadcast the type of grass seed you wish to grow. Cover the grass seed with 1/8 inch of compost and water the area.
- 5). Treat your prairie after seeding with a herbicide that contains imidazolinone when weed seedings have reached 4 inches in height. Use 4 fluid ounces per acre. Reapply according to instructions.
