How to Unplug a Kitchen Sink
- 1). Flush the drain with hot water for a few minutes. Often, the hot water will break up the clog and you will not need to go through further steps. If the water starts to go down again, your clog has been broken up; however, you may wish to pour in some liquid drain cleaner as a precaution.
- 2). Pour liquid or gel drain cleaner down the drain. Let the drain cleaner sit for 15 minutes. Flush the drain with hot water. This should clear the clog. If not, pour more liquid drain cleaner down the drain. Let the drain cleaner sit for longer this time, around 20 to 25 minutes. Repeat the flushing action.
- 3). Fill the sink with a few inches of warm water, if the drain was not cleared by the liquid drain cleaner. Get a plunger and put some petroleum jelly on the rim of the plunger cup. Attach the plunger to the drain. Plug the other side of the sink with a rag, if you have a double-bowl sink. With a few forceful, quick movements, plunge the drain for a minute, then flush the drain with hot water. Repeat the plunging and flushing action until the clog is cleared.
- 4). Buy or rent a cable auger, if your drain is still clogged. You can find augers at your local hardware store or anywhere that rents household tools for consumer use.
- 5). Clear out anything beneath your sink. Take your bucket and place it beneath the sink's trap---the bent pipe beneath the sink bowl. Use your wrench to take off the trap. The bucket will collect any water that comes out of the pipes. If the trap is where the clog is, remove the clog and replace the trap. If the clog isn't in the trap, move the bucket and grab your auger.
- 6). Uncoil about a foot of cable from the auger and push it into the part of the pipe that is attached to the wall. Turn the crank on the auger clockwise until you feel some resistance, which means you've reached the clog. Keep turning for a bit in order to break up the clog, then turn the crank counterclockwise for a bit. Repeat the clockwise/counterclockwise motions until you feel that you've broken through the clog. Once this happens, turn the crank counterclockwise and pull the clog out. Put the clog in the bucket.
- 7). Replace the trap securely. Flush the sink drain with hot water for a couple of minutes to break up any remaining bits of the clog.
