How to Make a Pine Book Shelf

    • 1). Decide where you'll put your book shelf. A little planning is important in deciding the right spot for your shelf. Consider different locations and put up pieces of masking tape to simulate the position of the shelf in different spots. Give yourself a few days to see how the shelf "feels" in different parts of the room or at different heights on the wall.

Mark the location where you want the shelf with a pencil when you've decided. Then measure up from the floor and mark the ends at the same height. Using a straight edge, and checking with a level, make a pencil line on the wall at the height of the shelf.

    • 3). Place wall brackets at 16-inch intervals along the pencil line, spacing them so that there will be an equal amount of extra space at each end. If possible, secure the brackets by screwing them into the wall studs. If that's not possible, use hollow wall anchors to secure the brackets. Line up the top edges of the brackets with the pencil line you made on the wall -- this will ensure that the shelf is level.

    • 4). Cut to size, then stain or paint your pine board, allow to dry, and place it on the brackets. Secure the shelf to the brackets from underneath with small wood screws -- this will keep the shelf from slipping off the brackets.
