Homemade Remedies to Get Rid of Mice
- Look around your home for small holes in the walls or floors, as this is one way that mice can enter. When a small hole is found, plug it up with steel wool. This will prevent mice from being able to enter and munch on food, destroy books and clothes, along with other items.
- One homemade remedy that some people have found effective is to drive mice away with nasty odors. The problem with this is that nasty odors could make it difficult for people to live in the home too. So, it is necessary to discover an odor that mice hate, and people love. One odor that works is peppermint oil. The key is purchasing 100 percent peppermint oil, and not using peppermint extract which is alcohol-based and will evaporate. Peppermint oil is the actual essential oil from peppermint plants. There are two options with this product: First, soak cotton balls in peppermint oil and put them in all the places you've noticed mice dropping and mice activity. For the second option, put 1 oz. of peppermint oil in 2 quarts of warm water in a spray bottle, then shake the bottle up. Finally, spray this mixture on the baseboards, in the drawers, and anywhere else the mice are visiting in the home. Mice don't like the smell of peppermint oil and it will repel them.
- The spring trap is one of the types of traps created to catch and kill mice. A spring trap is set up with a piece of food to attract the mouse. When the mouse eats the food the spring releases and the mouse is crushed. The downside to using spring traps is that children and pets can be injured in them as well, so if there are pets and/or young children in the home, it may be beneficial to try another homemade remedy for getting rid of mice.
- It is common for some to keep cut fire wood in the garage because it is easier to get to and warmer. However, mice love to nest in wood piles. If the fire wood is kept in the garage this is going to draw mice to the garage and hence to the home. Therefore, it is a good idea to keep the wood pile outside the home. This way there is less chance of mice finding a way inside.
- Mice and cats are natural enemies. What some may not know is that if mice smell a cat in a home, they will not enter. So cats are a natural repellent to mice. If by chance a mouse does enter the home where a cat is present, the cat normally will hunt day and night until it has caught and killed the mouse. Of course cats also can be costly due to the fact that they require care. Also, some are allergic to cats. If this is the case, another option that relates to this homemade method is to get a mixture of cat and fox odor which is undetectable to humans, as well as non-toxic, and spray it around your home. The mice will avoid your home believing there are both cats and foxes, another of their natural enemies.
