How to keep papers and bills organized
- 1
Use a paper shredder for junk mail containing personal information
Put mail away as you get it. This is the one of the worst culprits to the growing piles of paper in random rooms. We used to throw the mail on the kitchen counter and go through it gradually. This simply contributes to disorganization and the possibility of losing something important. Separate your mail into categories and then put them where they need to go. 1) bills-move them to your desk or next to the computer. 2)magazines- designate a place where they always go and make sure they go back there until you can recycle them. 3)junk mail- throw it or shred it in a cross-cut paper shredder if it is something with personal information. 4)cards/letters- have a special box designated for those that you want to save and throw the rest out. - 2
Create a filing system that works for you. This could mean several accordion file folders, a large filing cabinet, manila folders or binders with folders. Use the one that fits your style of organization. Create a file for EVERYTHING. When I say everything. I mean EVERYTHING. This includes a place for appliance warranties, manuals, recipes you have torn out of a magazines, coupons, income tax paperwork, credit card statements, paid bills, menus, pet information, etc. Any piece of paper that is left laying out on the counter or on your desk needs a file. Put it in the file right away! - 3). Go through your files regularly. Set aside one day each month to flip through your filed paperwork and throw away (or shred) anything you don't need anymore or take a look at things you need to remind yourself to do.
