BOSU - The Ultimate Balance Training Tool

Balance affects everything we do in life today.
The more effective we are able to balance our movement patterns the easier we are able to carry out walking, running jumping, twisting turning stepping and stopping ourselves from falling.
As we get older, our body and our mind slows down every year which means so too does our reaction time and our ability to correct our movement before it becomes an issue where we fall and injure ourselves.
But there is some good news! Balance is highly trainable and regardless of age or ability we can improve balance, especially when have something like a BOSU to help us train this area.
BOSU is the ultimate training tool, especially for balance because it forces the body to look at itself and function as a single unit with the result being less injuries and faster reactions.
If we improve our balance we are able to carry out movement faster and this makes us stronger.
The BOSU balance trainer brings into line the ankles knees and hips and this creates a link through the core and increases its strength at the same time.
When we injure ourselves the muscles and ligaments around that joints are stressed and they are unable to process a signal to tell the rest of the body what a correct movement pattern is.
So we need to retrain it to function effectively and this is assisted back to strength by using several balance pieces of equipment.
There are many of these on the market but they all have relatively the same function and that is to overload the joint progressively on an unstable surface where the muscles train to compensate with the correct balance or load.
The most common tool for this is the balance or wobble board and it rocks from side to side giving the ankle a platform to increase lateral movements for strength.
It is generally limited to ankle and knee regions so if there is instability in the core or lower back or hips this cannot be corrected with the wobble board.
The BOSU however creates lines of movement that have to be effective throughout the whole body meaning it helps to increase core strength, balance and upper body work.
BOSU stands for Both Sides Up or Both Sides Utilised, so you use this dome side down to create a balance instability which is more challenging and in multiple directions or on the dome side up for a more controlled balance challenge.
Many sports activities especially extreme sports require a much greater range of motion to be able to perform the skills for that sport (skiing snowboarding, surfing, skateboarding etc.
) and this can be simulated at many levels using the BOSU.
So if you are looking at improving your balance on any level whether it is for extreme sports or just to stop yourself from falling over, the BOSU is the ultimate balance training tool.
