Handmade garden tools are sometimes less costly than standard gardening tools because they can be produced using ordinary objects you may already have at home. Of course, handmade tools can cost more than standard tools if you are making them solely as an improvement over what is available commercially. Either way, making your own gardening tools can serve both of these purposes, depending on what you are looking for.

    Kneeling Board

    • Create your own kneeling board from an old cutting board or piece of particle board to save your knees from the hard ground or dirty flower and vegetable beds. Seal the item with primer and oil paint to make it moisture-resistant. Add a layer of foam to the top of the board and a layer of batting on top of that as a cushion. Cover the cushioned layers with a sheet of vinyl-coated fabric stapled to the board. This will make the item easy to clean if you get it dirty while working in the garden.

    Digging Tools

    • Digging tools are useful for planting, transplanting and removing your plants. Shovels, trowels and spades can all be made at home from other objects and materials. For transplanting needs, modify a bricklayer's trowel by cutting the point into a rounded shape and bending the handle back. This will allow you to insert the end of the trowel into the dirt and remove enough dirt to make a hole into which you can place root systems of the plant you are transplanting. To create a weed remover, attach the blade of a sturdy old potato peeler to the end of a broomstick. Insert the blade into the ground at the base of a weed to pull it out. The digger will save you from having to bend down and crawl about the garden pulling weeds.

    Plant Pots

    • Make your own plant pots in which to plant outdoor veggies and other plants. Visit your local pottery store and purchase unfinished clay pots that you can finish yourself or make them from scratch with clay and a pottery wheel. If you plan on making several pots, it may be wise to invest in your own kick-wheel so that you can make your pots in your garden shed. Make large pots for decorative trees, medium ones for veggies or flowers, and miniature pots for starting seeds.
