Motivation Not Required - How Waiting For Motivation Keeps You Stuck
It's great to feel motivated, isn't it? Motivation is a wonderful thing but having it as a requirement for taking action can really keep you stuck.
Here's what I've found: Taking action is what actually makes things happen.
If you wait until you're motivated to take action, a lot of things may never happen.
There is common misconception that we should wait to get moving until the motivation outweighs the fear.
Like when my personal motivation level gets strong enough, then I'll move.
When I really feel like it, then I'll get going.
The problem with that approach is that you could have all kinds of hidden resistance that can potentially keep you from ever feeling really motivated.
There ends up being a power struggle between your hidden resistance and your conscious desire to feel motivated.
This battle can be a long-term no-win situation.
Your subconscious is working to protect you with the resistance.
That's what it's doing and it's doing a very good job by bringing up all these negative things that didn't work before, all the reasons your idea might not work, all the reasons why it will take too long, why it's going to be too hard, etc.
So do you see how this ends up? If you have a belief that your feeling of motivation needs to be larger than your feeling of resistance in order for you to take action, you could be frozen for a long time -- totally stuck.
Here's an ironic situation: By simply taking action, your motivation increases and resistance decreases.
Taking action removes the reasons your subconscious has to keep fanning the flames of fears and anxiety.
It's like your resistance says, "Oh - I guess there's no point to keeping this up because she's not listening anyway.
" Game over.
So now all the good reasons you had to start the project or face the issue or whatever - they have room to breathe and expand into more motivation.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) is a tool that can help you reduce that resistance and increase the feeling of motivation.
But for today, here's what I want to say.
Go do something whether you're motivated or not.
You know what? Your history of having done that is actually going to be fuel for motivation for the next time.
