How to Care for Onyx Tile
- 1). Clean any spills or soap suds immediately, because food and certain chemicals may etch your stone. Only blot the spill with a cloth dampened with warm water. Do not rub it or you run the risk of scratching the surface. Limit exposure of your onyx to any acids or acid-based cleaners, because acids etch onyx.
- 2). Rinse onyx tile in the shower with warm water after every use. Also wipe down an onyx tile counter with a cloth and warm water after use. This will remove any residue that may stain or etch the tile.
- 3). Wash the tile thoroughly every couple of weeks. Use a stone-safe cleaner, not a detergent, to clean the counter and tile in the shower. The cleaner will list marble or onyx on the package if it is safe to use on that stone. For floors, sweep them first and then use a heavy-duty stone, grout and tile cleaner and a swivel head mop to clean the floor.
- 4). Protect your onyx floor from excess dirt by using doormats. Clean the doormats periodically to maximize effectiveness. Also use cutting boards on onyx tile countertops.
