How to Install an Electric Smoke Detector
- 1). Choose a location for the smoke detector. The U.S. Fire Administration recommends putting one on every level of your home, including the basement. If you're installing only one, put it near the bedrooms of your home.
- 2). Select a position on the wall or ceiling at least 5 inches from the edge. If you're mounting the alarm on an irregular or sloped ceiling, choose the highest point.
- 3). Use the bracket as a template and mark on the ceiling or wall where the screw holes will be. Drill through the marks with a 1/8-inch bit. Attach the bracket to the surface with the screws provided with the smoke detector.
- 4). Install the batteries, either in the back or from inside the smoke alarm. Clip or slide the smoke alarm into the bracket.
- 5). Test the detector by depressing the "test" button. It should sound loudly within 3 seconds.
