How to Use a Lathe Machine as a Beginner
- 1). Find a block of wood that has no cracks or splits in it. Even a small crack can be dangerous because it will being to split apart as the lathe rotates at high speed.
- 2). Locate the center of the wood by drawing two lines diagonally across it. The intersection of the two lines is the exact midpoint of the wood block. Mark the areas of the wood block that you wish to remove with the lathe.
- 3). Follow the instructions in your owner's manual to mount the wood block on the lathe's centers. Check the alignment of the wood to ensure that it will rotate in a straight line when you turn on the lathe.
- 4). Insert the tool attachment that is appropriate for your woodworking project. Most lathes come with an assortment of tools that include gouges to hack off large pieces of wood at a time to shaped chisels to make precise cuts.
- 5). Move the tool rest close to the wood block, but not so close that it will touch when the lathe is spinning. Put on your safety goggles and face mask and turn on the lathe's power switch. Watch the wood spin for a few seconds to make sure it is spinning in a straight line. Use the tool attachment to cut the wood block according to your markings.
- 6). Turn off the power switch and wait for the wood to stop spinning before attempting to remove it. Reverse the process from Step 3 to release the centers and take out the finished piece of wood.
