Review - Frisch 2007 Riesling, Monterey
Tonight we decided to try a wine from "the Wine Shop" , Frisch 2007 Riesling , Monterey.
Ron and I decided to have Chinese food from a local restaurant "The Red Pearl".
As we sat down and focused on this wine bottle, my thoughts immediately went to Germany.
This label was not only German in the name but very much so in the look of the label.
12 years of living in Europe, I was instantly transported to a time when we lived in Germany and the labeling was similar to labels I had seen on soda bottles.
I also got caught up sharing a memory with Ron.
When we were all of 20ish and sailing down the Rhine river on the top deck in awe of our surroundings.
I ordered a German Riesling and to my surprise it was very dry..
..
Oh so much to learn.
Tonight we looked forward on this warm summer evening to pair it with our meal.
We opened the bottle and Ron poured our glasses.
Pale yellow as if straw in color with good clarity.
As we swirled the glass the nose of this wine struck us both as very citrus with a hint of pear, maybe green apple.
Not quite what I had expected but nice nevertheless.
As we took our first sip the wine again reminded us of a light bodied wine with strong citrus flavors and a very long finish.
After commenting on the finish we realized the 13.
5% alcohol.
This wine was pleasant and would be good for casual occasions on a hot summer day even by it self.
Next the pairing, we first tried the wine with our Chinese chicken salad.
Both Ron and I felt the salad dressing over powered the wine and that it was better on it's own.
Next, we tried the combination chow mien.
This wine held up to the chow mien and the wine flavors were intensified.
Following next was the shrimp and black walnuts in a sweet glaze.
Again the wine worked well with this dish and our palette enjoyed the combination.
Finally, a brown rice combination (gotta throw in healthy at some point).
The wine once again paired well and we felt that our choice of this Riesling and Chinese went well together.
We both enjoyed this wine.
It was however a light bodied everyday drinking wine, perfect to sip outside on a hot day even on it's own.
Those who lean more towards a lighter white will enjoy this wine.
A great wine to "sich frisch machen" which in English translates to "to refresh oneself"! A perfect way of describing this wine.
We rate this wine (Good) Here are our Ratings: / Pass / Fair / OK / Good / Great / Fantastic Disclaimer: Just because we like or dislike a wine does not mean that you will have the same experience.
Of course it's always worth a try..
