Saturn got its start in 1986 when the brand was created by General Motors. The SL series of Saturn sedans received a makeover in 1996, but the only noticeable difference in 1999 was the addition of new paint colors and enhanced fuel economy. The 1999 Saturn SL comes in three trims -- the SL, SL1 and SL2 -- offering some different specifications. - All 1999 Saturn SL sedans feature a 1.9-liter, in-line engine. The SL and SL1 engines provide 100 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 114 foot-pounds of torque at 2,400 rpm. The SL2 puts out 124 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 122 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm. The engine holds four valves per cylinder. The SL and SL1 trims have a 9.3 compression ratio, while the SL2 features a 9.5 compression ratio.
- The 1999 Saturn SL series comes standard with a five-speed manual overdrive transmission. The SL1 and SL2 give consumers the option of a four-speed automatic transmission. The sedans feature two ventilated disc brakes. The Saturn SL uses strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, both with stabilizer bars.
- All 1999 Saturn SL trims feature a multi-point fuel injection system. The vehicles contain a 12.1-gallon fuel tank that uses unleaded gas. The gas mileage provided depends on the model. The SL2 puts out an estimated 25 to 27 miles per gallon in the city and 35 to 38 miles per gallon on the highway. The SL and SL1 provide slightly better fuel economy with 27 to 29 city miles per gallon and 37 to 40 highway miles per gallon.
- The 1999 Saturn SL sedans come in metallic and gloss paint with consumers having a choice of dark blue, medium red, blue or white. The cars have four doors, tinted glass, a rear spoiler and body color bumpers. All Saturn SL trims feature the same dimensions. The vehicles measure 176.8 inches long, 66.7 inches wide and 53.8 inches high. The curb weight ranges from 2,279 to 2,418 pounds depending on the model.
- Five passengers can sit inside the Saturn SL. The car features a four-speaker AM/FM radio, bucket seats, cloth seat upholsters and a leather-covered steering wheel. All 1999 SL trims include the same interior dimensions. Front passengers receive 39.3 inches of headroom and 42.5 inches of legroom, while rear riders receive 38 inches of headroom and 32.8 inches of legroom. With all seats in place, the Saturn SL provides 11.4 cubic feet of cargo space up to the lower window.
