Choosing The Right Window Valances

Valances are one of the secrets that help to make any window appear professional and complete. The valance, sometimes referred to as a window topper or top treatment, a fabric window treatment that covers the top of a window, usually sitting just above the window. Although the practical use for this addition is to hide hardware when necessary, it has actually become a very elegant decorative element in many homes. It can add color and softness to a room. Some windows have a simple valance design that is hung on a curtain rod, while others have quality custom valances that have been hand-tailored to fit the space and are typically attached to a fabric covered board. There are several considerations in choosing the right valance.

Type
Personal style can be expressed through the many types of valances available. Swag and scarf valances are strips of fabric wrapped around the ends of a curtain rod. The center of the material hangs down in the center. The ends drop downward from the rod. Swag varieties have very short ends that stop after a few inches or feet, while scarves descend all the way to the floor. Balloon types have a folded area that creates a pocket that some homeowners stuff with batting or tissue. Ascots are flat pieces that have decorative edges adorned with tassels or other trim. Tailored valances are simple strips with a rod pocket in the top. They can be bunched or flat.

Color
A valance acts as an accent for the rest of the room and fashion window treatments. A basic color choice is to match the fabric to the materials used for the curtains or blinds underneath. Another option is to choose a slightly lighter or darker color in order to define the different areas. A more complex situation occurs when the primary curtains have an intricate pattern. Selecting the same pattern allows the materials to blend together. Choosing a solid color to go over the pattern is best used when the pattern contains significant areas of a single coordinating color. Some designers select the color based on the other items in the room, such as blankets or upholstery.

Construction
There are two possible options when choosing a valance for a window treatment. Generic premade designs tend to work when the only purpose is to hide the hardware at the top of a window. A more attractive option is to choose quality custom valances. Customized valances give homeowners and designers the opportunity to create a consistent look and feel across the entire home. The custom design allows the fabrics to match and fit any window shape, size and decor. Quality custom valances also last longer than less expensive generic types which are mass produced.
