The Coffins Arrived By Air
A Navy Honor Guard Received the Coffins
On March 7, 2013, the remains of two sailors from the USS Monitor arrived at Dulles Airport in Virginia, after a flight from a military morgue in Hawaii.
The sailors had been aboard USS Monitor when it sank on the last day of 1862 off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. When the ironclad's gun turret was raised in 2002 the remains of two men were discovered.
The U.S. Navy spent years trying to identify the men, but their names are still unknown.
