Diet for Children With Asthma
- Studies have shown that children who eat more vegetables (and some fruits) have less of a problem with asthma than those who don't. This is because today's children have had their immune systems supplanted by vaccinations and better health care. Since the immune system no longer has a reason to make as many Th1 cells to protect against illness, it starts to make Th2 cells, which can irritate airways as they go about their jobs. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables help keep this irritation from taking place, resulting in fewer asthma attacks and an all-around healthier child.
- For children who are prone to attacks due to asthma, vitamin C may be extremely helpful. Studies have shown that as little as 0.5 grams of vitamin C--a little less than one pear or four figs--can provide relief if taken before exercise. And because a child will probably need a snack before playing, a piece of fruit is a good idea on general principle.
- What if you have a newborn? Many studies show that a baby's risk of developing asthma is decreased when nonasthmatic mothers breastfed their children. Asthmatic mothers with their symptoms under control had similar results. A good breastfeeding coach can help teach you how to express and store your milk.
