• Nylon strings are not used on electric guitars. Electric guitar strings must be metal so the magnetic pickup can read their vibrations. MusicCenters.com also warns against using nylon strings on acoustic guitars set up for steel strings. However, this is not a steadfast rule. In general, classical guitars are the place for nylon strings. Classical guitars tend to be smaller than steel string acoustic guitars. Classical guitars also have slightly different bridges than steel string guitars. On a classical guitar, you have to tie the strings around the bridge as opposed to holding them in place with small plastic pegs.
  
  

History

• The first guitar and lute strings were made of sheep intestines. Over time, they became known as gut strings. It wasn't until 1946 that nylon strings became more popular than gut strings. Anthony Dixon of Guitar-Maker.com explains that steel strings were invented around the turn of the 19th century, but it wasn't until the twenties until the technology was in place for guitar necks to support the extra strain created by steel strings. Feel

• There is a common misconception about nylon guitar strings being easier to play than steel strings. This stems from the fact that nylon strings are under less tension and thicker than steel strings. For a novice, the smooth feel of nylon strings may be easier on the fingertips as well. Nylon strings are more conducive to finger picking than flat picking, while steel strings are the exact opposite.The only definite way to decide which type of string feels right to you is to try both.
  
  

Expense

• Nylon strings, like steel strings, tend to cost between $5 and $20. Strings come from a variety of different manufacturers, and if you are not familiar with the quality of these manufacturers' strings, you may want to consult an employee at a music store. In general, though, you get what you pay for. More expensive strings are often chemically treated, thus allowing them to maintain their sound longer.
  
  

Sound

• The most important aspect of deciding what type of string to use is the sound you wish to achieve. Steel strings sound bright and snappy, whereas nylon stings sound softer and muted. Steel strings are generally used in rock and roll, blues and country music, while nylon strings tend be used in classical music and forms derived from classical music (including some types of heavy metal). Again, the best way to decide which style of string is best suited for your playing style is to try both kinds.
