How to Install a Preformed Garden Pond
- 1). Select a site that is reasonably level and in full sun. Choose a location away from underground utility lines and pipes.
- 2). Mark the outline of the top edge of your preformed pond on the ground. Lay out the cord or rope to mark the outline, and hold it in place with stakes. Another option is to use chalk dust or spray marker to make the outline.
- 3). Dig the entire pond outline. Dig it only as deep as the first level of shelves, if your pond is equipped with them. Then reset your pond form in the dug area, and mark the outline of the bottom of the pond in the bottom of your dug area.
- 4). Dig the lower level of your pond about 2 inches deeper than the depth of your form. This method of digging cuts your digging labor, and it leaves nicely compacted soil in place under the shelf areas of your pond. This reduces the amount of backfill you will need to do to support your preformed pond.
- 1). Place about 2 inches of builder's sand in the bottom of the pond dugout. Rake it smooth, and check it for level. Add sand and rake until the base is smooth and level.
The top edge of the preformed pond should be elevated slightly above the surrounding soil. Create a slight grade (10 degrees) running away from the pond. Rainwater runoff should drain away from the pond to keep dirt and debris from washing in. - 2). Rinse the pond form out completely so it is clean. Do not use cleaners.
- 3). Set the preformed pond in place in the hole.
- 4). Install the pump. Follow manufacturer's instructions.
- 5). Pack sand and fill dirt very tightly around the outside of the pond liner, filling every space possible. For fill dirt, use the dirt you just dug out. Fill the pond with water slowly as you backfill. The water will hold the pond in shape so you won't overfill an area and warp the form. Turn the water off and on as you work so you are always doing backfill within a few inches of the water level.
