Sunday School Peanut Butter Jar Activities
- Get some plastic decorations from a craft store. Have students use a hot glue gun to glue the items, standing up, to the bottoms of the jars to create a scene. If it is hard to reach, put the hot glue on the decorations and use tongs to place them to the bottom of the jars. When the glue dries, fill the jars with water and add a teaspoon of glitter to each jar. Leave about 1/2-inch of space at the top of the jars. Close the lids tightly. Ideas for scenes in the bottom of the jars include Noah's ark, the manger scene, Moses and the Red Sea, John the Baptist and the Lord's Supper.
- Cover the jars with thick paper so that you cannot see inside. Have each class member decorate their own jar with their name, a Bible verse or a Bible character that they admire. Each Sunday, have the students write their worst problems on a small piece of paper. Have each student put their problem in their jar and seal it tightly. Explain that the problem is not theirs anymore because once they put it in the jar, it belongs to God.
- Have each class member decorate their own peanut butter jar and put their name on it. Display the jars in the classroom. Each Sunday, give all of the members of the class an opportunity to say their weekly Bible verse aloud. For each Bible verse learned, the class member gets to put a pom pom in their jar. The student who fills her jar first earns a prize or reward.
- Peanut butter jars decorated with construction paper, stickers, glitter and markers are handy for storing markers, crayons, pens, pencils and other supplies in the Sunday school room. Put a Bible verse on each one so students can learn them. Ideas for Bible verses to use are Proverbs 3:13-19, I Corinthians 13:4-7, the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:3-17) and the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12).
- Peanut butter jars make excellent collection jars for offerings. You can decorate them and put a slit in the lid for the money. If you are raising money for an event or are having a competition, each student can decorate his own jar with his name on it. The student who fills his jar first receives a prize or reward. Donate the money to a charity, use it for supplies or take the class on a trip with the proceeds.
