    Puppet Mouth

    • Mouth Pattern

Make a mouth area on the sock puppet. Every sock puppet will begin this same way with a cardboard mouth and then the embellishments can be added to make the sock puppet into whatever character or animal is desired.

Cut an oval shape from light-weight cardboard as shown in the diagram. The mouth piece should be approximately four inches long and three inches wide. Fold the mouth in half along the dotted line. Cut a piece of red felt the same size as the mouth and glue the felt to the cardboard with hot glue. If desired, a small oval tongue can also be cut out of pink felt and glued to one half of the inner mouth.

    Attach the Mouth

    • Mouth Attachment

Place the sock onto your hand so that the heel is positioned at the back of your hand and your fingers reach the toes of the sock. Insert the folded mouth into the toe area of the sock so that it fits into the fabric of the sock. The curved side of the mouth should be facing out. Trim the edges of the sock fabric at the toes approximately 1/2-inch beyond the mouth piece so that the sock fabric curves around the mouth piece.

Take the sock off your hand and lay it down flat on a work surface so that the heel is on the top. Spread out the opening at the toe of the sock and place the mouth piece at the opening. Begin to hot glue the mouth piece to the opening, carefully arranging the sock fabric around the mouth piece so that it is neatly pulled around the entire cardboard mouth.
