How to Crochet a Reggae Hat
- 1). Chain five stitches in the first round using your first color yarn. Slip stitch one to close the circle. Single crochet another stitch at the spot where you closed the circle.
- 2). Single crochet two stitches into each chain of the first row for a total of 10 stitches. To make even single crochet stitches throughout the chain, hold the hook in one hand, and hold your hat round between your index finger and thumb. Place the ball of yarn about 18 inches away from you and allow the thread to drape over your middle finger. Insert the hook into each chain and pull it through. When you have two loops on your hook, wrap the thread around the base of the hook and pull it through. Continue to single crochet twice in each single crochet in rows two through four.
- 3). Double crochet into each single crochet for row five. To make a double crochet stitch, wrap the yarn around your hook, insert the hook into the stitch below, and pull up a loop. When you have three loops on your hook, wrap the yarn around your hook and pull it through two loops. Wrap the yarn around the hook and pull it through the final two loops to complete the stitch. Continue to double crochet for rows six and seven.
- 4). Wrap the beginning of the ball of your second color yarn over your hook at the beginning of row eight. Continue to double crochet in each stitch in the second color for rows 9 and 10. Try on the hat to make sure it fits after row 13. If the hat is curving too tightly, make one row of double crochets in each stitch to loosen it. Return to double crochet stitches your first color for rows 11 through 13.
- 5). Wrap the third color yarn over your hook and make double crochets in each stitch for rows 14 and 15. Continue to make one crochet in each stitch in colors of your choice for rows 15 to 20.
- 6). Single crochet in each stitch for your final row. Slip stitch the end of the final row, and clip the yarn. Turn the hat inside out and tie loose yarn in knots to complete your hat.
