This is a Photoshop meme that features a character named Patrick Star, from the kids' show SpongeBob Squarepants.Patrick, who is SpongeBob's best friend, and a lovable idiot, is wearing a shocked facial expression.The image was taken from a still of the movie, The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie.It hit the web originally in 2010, but didn't really take off until February of 2013, when it was submitted to Reddit and the Cheezburger Network.
This spring, Surprised Patrick is showing up everywhere on the web, with users Photoshopping him into their family photos, news clips, animated gifs, and other memes.There's also a Surprised Patrick Twitter account, Tumblr, and more.More »
In late March of 2013, the Supreme Court held hearings in which they heard arguments for and against same-sex marriage.In order to drum up support, the Human Rights Campaign, which is America’s largest organization fighting for LGBT rights, urged their Facebook followers to change their profile pictures to a red version of their equality symbol.Millions of Facebook users did just that.Naturally, some creative folks decided to tweak the equality symbol in the name of humor, and voila!A meme was born.
