Soil

• Most viburnums thrive in moist, rich soil that is slightly acidic. You can enrich the soil by adding organic material at planting time. Mulch with a layer of straw or bark to keep the soil from drying out.
  
  

Light

• Viburnum species vary in the amount of light they require, with some tolerating shade and others needing full sun. Many varieties do best when they are shaded during the hottest part of the day.
  
  

Care

• Once established, viburnums require little care, but they will appreciate deep watering during spells of dry weather. You can control the height and spread of the shrub by pruning in early spring. Remove any old or weak canes at this time.
  
  

Planting Time

• Fall planting is ideal for viburnums. If you choose to plant a container-grown viburnum in the spring, take special care to provide the shrub extra water through the summer months until it becomes established.
