Some of the most simple ways to prevent hair loss in both men and women can be done at home and without the need for prescription medicines or harmful side effects. The following information shows some of the best ways to find hair loss cures through natural and non prescription suggestions.

Hair Washing

Shampoos and conditioners are two of the most important products used on the hair. Any shampoo used should have a pH of 5.5 or be as close to neutral as possible. Conditioners that contain cocoa butter, coconut oil, mamey or vitamin E help keep hair moisturized and prevent breakage. Some shampoos and/or conditioners have UV protection from the sun, those are also helpful even during the winter. The sun does not have to be shining in order for UV rays to reach the earth. A scalp cleanser that removes DHT should be used before shampooing if at all possible; not many stores stock DHT removers on the shelf, but they can be found online from a company called Bio Hair. The hair should always be rinsed with lukewarm or cool water so as not to damage existing hair and to close the hair follicle and pores before brushing or styling.

Styling Products and Procedures

When brushing or styling wet hair, a wide toothed comb or boar bristle brush is best. Both are less likely to pull the hair from the root and the boar bristle brush helps by spreading the scalp's natural oils through the hair. For those who dry their hair, never use silicone or frizz reducing products that appear oily. These products do reduce frizz but do more damage than good. The hair actually over heats when a dryer, flat iron or curling iron is used. The best products will say on the container that they are made to be used with heat. Detangling creams or sprays are also helpful in preventing the hair from breaking or being pulled out. A UV protectant should also be applied, many coming in the form of sprays or light gels.

Hair Styles and Upkeep Suggestions

Women should try to keep their hair styles loose, but if circumstances require tight styling, the hair should be kept loose at night and as often as possible. Instead of using rubber or elastic bands, using fabric covered bands pull out less hair. For men who use hair gel or styling products, those should be lightly rinsed from the hair every night to prevent build up. Taking vitamin E pills orally can help give the hair more strength and shine. Another more unconventional supplement that both men and women can take are prenatal vitamins. Many varieties can be bought at stores like Walmart and do not need a prescription. Some people complain that the pills are too big, but they can be crushed or taken with food. Another lesser known supplement that is applied directly to the hair and scalp is Emu oil. It was first proven to promote hair growth in mice and later on proven to also work in humans.
